The Truth About The 'January Effect' - Business Insider

Some investors ascribe mystical powers to January, saying that as goes January, so goes the year, or, as go the first five days of January, so goes the year, etc.

Is there any basis for reading much into January trading?

It turns out: As goes any month, so goes the year.

Dan Greenhaus at BTIG explains:

It is commonly asserted, as we note, that January is an important leading indicator for full year performance. In 2008 for instance, January was down by 6.12% and the full year ended up being down 38.5% inclusive of said January. But, a quick look at other months shows the exact same trend. Taken at face value, the belief that January is an important indicator of the twelve month period imparts greater importance on January than any other month and other twelve month periods. However, when doing the same analysis on other months, we learn that:

  • When February is down, the 12 month return inclusive of that February is 2.0%. When February is up, the S&P 500 returns 12.53%
  • When March is down, the 12 month return inclusive of that March is 3.5%. When March is up, the S&P 500 returns 11.46%
  • When April is down, the 12 month return inclusive of that April is -0.23%. When April is up, the S&P 500 returns 12.87%
  • When May is down, the 12 month return inclusive of that May is 4.39%. When May is up, the S&P 500 returns 11.61%

We could go on but you get the point. As goes any month? so goes any twelve month period.

Still! It's exciting that January, and therefore 2012, is off to such a solid start.

Iran's 'alarming' nuclear fuel-rod claim (The Week)

New York ? Tehran warns the West that its nuclear program has made a giant leap forward. How worried should we be?

Iran announced Sunday that its scientists had produced the country's first nuclear fuel rods. If true, the "alarming" development would mark a big advance in Iran's ability to create nuclear energy or nuclear weapons. The news came as President Obama signed legislation toughening sanctions meant to urge Tehran to halt its nuclear program. Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum greeted Iran's claim by saying that the U.S. may soon be forced to launch military strikes. Should we be worried?

This is very bad news: If Iran really has built and tested its own fuel rods, says Rick Moran at The American Thinker, that would mean it can "build its own small nuclear reactor in order to process uranium into plutonium" instead of having to get its fuel from Russia. What makes this unexpected news more "worrisome": Iran is currently test-firing missiles over the Straits of Hormuz, a critical oil-tanker gateway.
"Iran test fires new surface to air missile"

But there's no need to panic yet: "While any development of Iran's nuclear program is certainly cause for some alarm," says Jonathan Moormann at Ology, "it is probably too early to be overly concerned." As it has done in the past, Tehran is likely exaggerating its capabilities in an attempt to strengthen its hand in upcoming negotiations with the West. And even if Iran can make fuel rods, the country's scientists are probably nowhere near "weaponizing their nuclear technology."
"Iran claims to have produced its first nuclear fuel rod"

If you're not scared, you're in denial: It's time to stop "pretending that the Islamic Republic of Iran has friendly intentions," says Khalaf Al Habtoor in the United Arab Emirates' Gulf News. Tehran's mullahs have been inciting their fellow Shiites to revolt in neighboring countries, and flexing their muscles in the Straits of Hormuz. Iran is out to build a nuclear bomb and rule the Persian Gulf region ? anyone who can't see that now is in "a state of denial." It's time to get tough. "What are we waiting for?"
"Time to react to open Iranian threats"

Fulham rallies past Arsenal

By ROB HARRIS

updated 4:40 p.m. ET Jan. 2, 2012

LONDON - Steve Sidwell tied the score in the 85th minute and Bobby Zamora got the go-ahead goal in the second minute of stoppage time, giving Fulham a 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Monday night that knocked the Gunners from the Premier League's top four.

Laurent Koscielny's 21st-minute goal on a header put Arsenal ahead, but the Gunners played a man short after Johan Djourou was ejected for his second yellow card following a rough tackle in the 78th.

Chelsea moved into fourth with a 2-1 victory at Wolverhampton, easing the pressure on manager Andre Villa-Boas. Frank Lampard scored the tiebreaking goal in the 89th minute, ending the Blues' four-game winless streak. Ramires put Chelsea ahead in the 54th minute, but Stephen Ward tied it in the 84th.

Chelsea (11-5-4) has 37 points, one more than Arsenal (11-6-3). Manchester City leads Manchester United (both 14-2-3 and 45 points) on goal difference, with Tottenham (12-3-3) third at 39.

City hosts Liverpool on Tuesday night and Tottenham is home against West Bromwich Albion.

Aston Villa and Blackburn lost at home after upset victories last weekend. Stoke won 2-1 over Blackburn, which was coming off Saturday's 3-2 triumph at defending champion Manchester United. Villa followed its win at Chelsea with a 2-0 loss to Swansea.

Norwich won a battle of promoted teams, rallying past Queens Park Rangers 2-1. Captain Joey Barton put QPR in front in the 11th minute, but received a red card in the 36th after an apparent headbutt on Bradley Johnson.

Anthony Pilkington tied it with a long-range shot in the 42nd and Steve Morison scored in the 83rd to extend QPR's winless streak to eight league matches.

___

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) ? Celtic maintained a two-point lead over Rangers in the Scottish Premier League as the Glasgow rivals both won 3-0.

Celtic won at Dunfermline to extend its league winning streak to 10, getting goals from Anthony Stokes, Victor Wanyama and Charlie Mulgrew.

Rangers bounced back from its Old Firm derby defeat, beating Motherwell on goals by David Healy, Sone Aluko and Stephen Craigan. American midfielder Maurice Edu assisted on Healy's goal.

Motherwell's Tom Hateley cleared a header by U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra off the goal line after an Aluko corner kick.

Brock Lesnar Retires From UFC After Loss to Alistair Overeem

Brock Lesnar went down hard against kickboxer Alistair Overeem in the first round at UFC 141 last night. A few minutes later, he announced his retirement.

The former heavyweight champion finished his own meteoric mixed martial arts career on a losing note at Friday's Ultimate Fighting Championship event.

Lesnar retired from the UFC after Overeem stopped him with one vicious kick to the body at 2:26 of the first round in their much-touted heavyweight bout.

"Tonight is the last time you'll see me in the octagon," Lesnar said.

That leaves the UFC heading into 2012 without its biggest star.

Even though he fought only seven times in the UFC, Lesnar was a pay-per-view audience magnet because of his compelling past as a WWE "champion."

He reigned as heavyweight champ, headlined UFC 100, generated the most Internet traffic of any MMA fighter and actually has fights left on his contract.

UFC President Dana White and Chairman Lorenzo Fertitta took the high road with Lesnar even after the fighter blew off the post-fight news conference.

White said, "When a guy decides he wants to retire, you let him do it. This is not, 'Go hit a ball with a stick for the next two or three years on your way out.'"

"This is the real deal, guys. ?We'll figure it out." He said regardless of how many fights Lesnar has on his contract, "Doesn't matter. If he's done, he's done."

Humboldt State University student, family survive plane crash; survivor tells story

Humboldt State University student Wilson Bowles described the fiery plane wreck he survived this week as ?one of the scariest things I've ever been in.?

The plane, piloted by Wilson Bowles' brother Zebulon Bowles, 32, crashed near the Lebanon-Warren County Airport in Ohio on Wednesday.

Another brother, Zach Bowles, 30, and his wife Katherine Bowles, 30, were also in the plane. Katherine Bowles remains in critical condition.

Reached Thursday via Skype, Wilson Bowles said the problems began shortly after takeoff when a door on the Piper 28 airplane that Zebulon Bowles rented from the airport blew open.

Wilson Bowles said his brother steered the plane back toward the airport but a crosswind came up and pushed the plane off course from the runway during a landing attempt. He said his brother punched it and went back up to try and land again when there was a ?loud pop and the engine died.? ?I said, 'Zeb -- is there anything wrong?' He was like: 'Yes.'?

Wilson Bowles said his brother kept the plane pretty straight as he piloted toward the airport. As they approached, the plane hit power lines.

?All of a sudden we were on the ground,? Wilson Bowles said.

The plane flipped upside down in a field and caught fire.

?Parts of it were exploding,? Wilson Bowles said, adding one of his brothers kicked at him, yelling at him to get out of the plane as he struggled with his seat belt.

All four passengers were able to quickly get out of the burning wreckage.

?It's kind of a miracle how it happened,? Wilson Bowles said. He said a trauma doctor who lived nearby came immediately to their aid, and the emergency response was quick.

Benay Bowles, Wilson Bowles' mom, went up in the Piper 28 with her sons earlier that day. Back at the airport, she received a call from a strange phone number. Not recognizing it, she didn't answer. It was Zebulon Bowles calling from a police officer's cell phone.

Wilson Bowles said no one at the airport notified his mom. It was painters working on a building who told her a plane went down. As Benay Bowles drove away from the airport, she passed ambulances carrying her sons, not knowing until 15 or 20 minutes later that they were the ones who crashed.

Zach Bowles broke a facial bone. Zebulon Bowles damaged three cervical vertebrae and may have to travel to Chicago for surgery on his neck. They both remain hospitalized.

Wilson Bowles underwent surgery and was released. He said his ear hung by a flap, he cut his head and had glass in his scalp. After 55 stitches and three staples, he is back at his brother's house in Lebanon, Ohio.

On Monday, Wilson Bowles posted a photo of the Piper 28 plane in a hangar on Facebook, along with the note: ?About to go flying -- with Zebulon Bowles.?

Wilson Bowles said his brother recently received his pilot license but has been flying since he was 14 or 15. He acquired all of his necessary flight hours after years of flying and finally decided to get his license about six months ago. Wilson Bowles said the flight instructor who administered the test told Zebulon Bowles he was a good pilot.

Wilson Bowles has some post-operation appointments but said he is anxious to get back to Arcata. He has classes starting in January, and he plays tuba for the Marching Lumberjacks. He said dozens of messages are pouring in from concerned family and friends around the world.

Benay Bowles stood by as Wilson Bowles told his story. ?You guys got a second life,? she said.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Cory said she could not give any details on the crash with the investigation in the early stages. Cory said it usually takes months to determine what caused a crash.

Executive change at ABC's `This Week' (AP)

NEW YORK ? After bringing back George Stephanopoulos to replace Christiane Amanpour on Sunday's "This Week" political talk show, ABC is making a change behind the scenes as well.

The network's news president, Ben Sherwood, said Friday that Jon Banner will replace Rick Kaplan as the show's executive producer. Banner was a longtime producer of "World News" before taking on a wider role recently at ABC News.

Sherwood says Kaplan will produce ABC's New Hampshire primary and offer a "critical voice" in news and election coverage later.

"This Week" has been sinking in the ratings behind NBC and CBS, and Stephanopoulos agreed to come back to the show while continuing as co-anchor of "Good Morning America" during the week.

Belgium: Government To Finance The 2012 Motocross of Nations ...

They only just recently got a government, after 2 years of empty seats, and already the government in Belgium did a good, if not great, deed. They have agreed to finance the 2012 FIM/Monster Motocross Des Nations Open link in a new window to the tune of ?250,000.

The 2012 edition of the motocross race, with motorcycle teams representing their countries, will be organized in Lommel Click for map, Belgium, and will be run on 30 September 2012.

It's a good sign that a government steps in to finance a motorcycle race, even if they have all the chance of winning it (they are 3rd in the number of wins, with the USA in 1st place and the UK in 2nd). Their only demand is that they get involved in the communication and promotional materials. Not bad....

Herb and lavender-stuffed standing pork loin rib roast

The kind of dish that makes you want to friend your local butcher.

I feel kinda cheesy. I admit it, I feel cool about using a butcher. I understand this is lame and that butchers have been around for ages, but, truthfully, in the recent year, we?ve really gotten to know our neighborhood butchers. Growing up in the ?burbs, meat was only bought pre-cut and pre-packaged. Yes, every once in awhile you?d see the grocery store?s butcher come out from behind those weird black, plastic doors with the small square window.

Skip to next paragraph Jonny and Amy Seponara-Sills

Amy and Jonny Seponara-Sills (Amy?s American, Jonny?s English) run the food blog We Are Never Full. Through recipes, anecdotes and podcasts, it chronicles their borderline obsession with food from meals made at home to travels studiously built around the search for authentic regional and national dishes from all over the world.

Recent posts

After our first attempt at making homemade sausage, I realized how invaluable a butcher is. We live in a country where many people don?t know what kind of animal their meat comes from. Hold up an eggplant to a 10-year old and good chance they may not even know what the hell it is. It?s sad that the neighborhood butcher is starting to become a thing of the past. I live in Brooklyn, NY, one of the most multicultural places on earth and, in my 'hood alone we only have a few butchers left. I?m talking about the neighborhood butcher, not that gourmet food store up the street. You know the place ? the guy/gal behind the counter has butchers hands and fingers, you know his/her name and he/she knows your name, they don?t switch employees as quickly as McDonald?s and they can easily ask you if you want ?the regular." Word is that the decline in these gems is because young people aren?t interested in carrying on the family trade. Maybe with this economic downward spiral Americans will be more willing to work with their hands again and see the beauty how happy meat/poultry can make people.

Jonny and I have wanted to try and make a dish that we ate in Florence, Italy at the awesome Coco Lezzone since the last time we recreated their Pappa al Pomodoro. It was one of those meals from start to finish that will forever stay etched in my mind. Saveur did a cover story on their Herb-Stuffed Pork Loin in their April 2006 issue. We tweaked the recipe just a bit (lavender wasn?t a part of the original recipe) and, thanks to our awesome butcher, the dish turned out phenomenally.

Coco Lezzone's Herb and Lavendar-Stuffed Pork Loin Rib Roast
Serves 6

1 6-rib center-cut pork loin roast (about 4-5 lbs)
6 cloves of garlic, peeled and ground to a paste
2 tablespoons of chopped rosemary
3 tablespoons of chopped sage
2 tablespoons of thyme
1 tablespoon dried lavender
2 tablespoons + 1/4 (or so) cup olive oil
salt and pepper

Preheat over to 475 degrees F.

In a small bowl, add together the garlic, all the herbs and lavender with a pinch of salt and pepper and 2 tablespoons olive oil. Use a fork to make sure it?s all incorporated together.

Push the handle of a long wooden spoon through the center of one end of the pork roast allowing it to poke through the other end?s center. Do this again, moving the handle back and forth and in a circular motion to allow the hole to get bigger. It will end up being about 3/4 of an inch wide.

Reserve about 3/4 of a tablespoon of the herb mixture to be use in a moment. Using your fingers, push some of the herb/garlic mixture into the center hole starting on one side and the finishing on the other. Put roast in a roasting pan.

Pour about 1/4 cup or so of olive oil over the roast. Rub it in a bit. Using the reserved herb mixture, rub all around the top and sides of the rib roast. Season generously with salt and pepper and roast the pork in the oven until golden brown ? about 25 to 30 minutes. Reduce the oven to 350 degrees and continue to roast for an hour longer or until the internal temperature is 160 degrees.

Allow pork to rest about 10 minutes and then carve into individual chops. Serve with the pan drippings (which are DEEE-LISH, by the way!).
