Investing In A Home Is The Largest Funding Any Of Us Will Ever ...

Investing in a house is the largest investment any of us will ever make. For almost all of individuals shopping for a home entails taking out a mortgage for fifteen to thirty years. This is a big time and monetary obligations that should not be entered into lightly. After we have been first out there for a home we met with a realtor to debate the value vary that we felt comfortable with. She had us fill out a form with our financial data on. We have been shocked when she informed us that we might purchase a house in an a lot greater worth vary than we felt we may afford. She assured us that this might be doable for us and she began trying via the listings at homes that have been listed on the multiple listings system.

After taking a look at several houses and not finding one which we fell in love with we had been beginning to get discouraged. We had been on the lookout for homes within the newspaper also under the houses for sale by proprietor section. Someday we noticed an inventory that appeared perfect. Most of the houses on the market by owners state no realtors, so we referred to as the quantity directly and set up an appointment to see the house.

The owners had been very pleasant. They explained that they had been transferring to another state to be nearer to family and to have climate that was less harsh than our winters. The house that they were selling was built as their retirement home. It was an one degree house on twenty acres of land. We cherished the setting and the house was solely ten years old. The wall colours have been a bit vibrant for our taste, but we thought just a few cans of paint would repair that. We advised them that we were very interested and needed to provide them earnest money to carry the property whereas we organized to have a house inspection done. They informed us that a verbal settlement can be positive and they promised to call us immediately if one other offer would come in so we might have first probability to purchase the house. We left feeling that this seemed like such a pleasant method to do business. We had learned sufficient about what house owners had to disclose by going to the opposite houses with the realtor. We have been glad that we appeared within the houses on the market by owners section. We would not should pay the realtor price and yet by having the home inspected we?d not be moving into one thing that was not disclosed.

The house inspection went well. There have been no surprises and the closing was very relaxed without having the realtor?s on the table.

UN says North Korea needs food aid, not politics (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? Wealthier countries need to put aside politics to help millions of North Koreans going hungry from food shortages, the U.N.'s top relief official said, renewing an appeal for assistance that has largely gone unmet.

Speaking at the end of a five-day visit to North Korea, Valerie Amos, a U.N. undersecretary-general, said Friday that 6 million North Koreans, particularly children, mothers and pregnant women, need help. The figures, she said, are borne out by UN data and by what she learned from visits to farms, hospitals and orphanages, as well as from officials.

People's diets, she said, consist of rice, corn, cabbage, little else and no protein or nutrient rich foods.

While she acknowledged concerns about whether the authoritarian government diverts food aid or underfunds agriculture, Amos urged donor countries to put the needs of North Koreans ahead of other considerations.

"This is about helping the people who are most in need. It's not about saying that this country has made a choice about spending its resources in one way rather than another. We don't make those judgments in other countries, on humanitarian grounds. There's no reason to begin to do it in" North Korea, Amos told The Associated Press before leaving Pyongyang.

Hers is the latest appeal to meet a U.N. request in April for $218 million in emergency aid. Only a third has been met as key donors such as the United States largely shun giving over North Korea's provocative behavior and persisting questions about whether North Korea is withholding food from its public.

Washington approved $900,000 in emergency flood aid in August but has held back on approving food aid in part because Pyongyang is funding a nuclear program, reneging on nuclear disarmament pledges. Key U.S. ally South Korea, which earlier in the last decade provided large amounts of food aid, stopped giving after its conservative president, Lee Myung-back, took office in 2008.

U.N. agencies and humanitarian groups continue to have trouble monitoring how their aid is distributed ? issues Amos said she raised with North Korean officials. She said she also discussed the "chronic poverty and underdevelopment" she saw.

Still, she said, donors should not doubt the evident need for food aid. "Donors need to trust the information that they're being given. They need to trust what they're being told about the situation here," Amos said.

Amos will apply her findings to a revised need assessment to be presented in two or three weeks.

At a news conference later Friday in Beijing, she said that, despite calamitous flooding, this year's harvest seemed on track to be as good or better than last year's, but that still wouldn't be enough to feed the country's 24 million people.

Amos said she'd been given rare access to a government public distribution center, where rations that have fallen from 21 ounces (600 grams) a day to 7 ounces (200 grams) a day per person are handed out, as well as to a private market where more nutritious food is available at prices far beyond the means of most North Koreans.

Amos said she made clear to North Korean officials that they need to provide better data to assess needs, but also that the North must take the lead in humanitarian work and fix the systemic problems underlying chronic food shortages, such as a lack of mechanization in agriculture.

"The answer does not rest in the international community coming in as a result of an appeal and supporting the public distribution system through what we are able to do, particularly for those who are most vulnerable," Amos said.

"The government has to take responsibility," she said.

Jennifer Morrison puts new twist on TV fairy tale (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Actress Jennifer Morrison, best known for her portrayal of Dr. Allison Cameron on "House M.D.," returns to television this Sunday, putting a new twist on the idea of a fairy tale life in "Once Upon a Time."

Set in the small New England town of "Storybrooke," the drama alternates between a land of make-believe, full of princes and evil queens, to a parallel world in modern-day Maine, where townspeople remain unaware they are part of a fantasy world.

Morrison portrays Emma, an abused foster child who is the abandoned daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. Reuters spoke to her about the new series.

Q: Your new show is from the writers of sci-fi fantasy "Lost." Are there similarities between the shows?

A: "It's not so much that it's similar, but I do feel like they've taken some elements of the structure of "Lost" and used that to serve the storytelling in "Once Upon A Time," kind of similar to the way the viewer gets to know the character in "Lost" through flashbacks. Everyone is in reality and existing in reality and the flashback element flashes to fairy tale land when these people were actually the characters who we are suggesting that they are."

Q: What do you think will draw fans to the series?

A: "The show is incredibly unique and different from anything I know to compare it. I think it's kind of a combination of 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Harry Potter.' It definitely has elements of good vs. evil and there's fairy tale characters involved, but it's also very grounded in reality and focuses on people's very real, very gritty relationships with each other."

Q: How did you prepare for Emma because there's not a lot of people who can claim to be the abandoned daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming?

A: "I've been reading memoirs by people raised in the foster system, and trying to take bits and pieces from each memoir of those who have been through that system, forced to move from home to home, who have had abusive foster parents or have really kind foster parents, but did not know how to handle someone being kind to them since they were abused in the past. It's been really quite fascinating and heartbreaking to learn about these stories and how these kids have had to exist in that system."

Q: You trained in theater. How does your theatrical background figure into your work on "Once Upon a Time?"

A: "I've been acting for as long as I can remember. It's all I ever wanted to do. I was very lucky to grow up in a school with a great theater program, and I've been on stage since I was 5 years-old. I ended up going to Loyola University where I majored in theater, and then studied at Steppenwolf. I guess with "Once Upon a Time" specifically, there is a theatrical element to the storytelling, so I believe I can transfer some of my theater training to the show."

Q: Will Dr. Cameron be coming back to "House?"

A: "Playing Dr. Cameron was life-changing in all the most amazing ways and I loved being on that show and I would do it again in a heartbeat. I haven't been contacted by anyone from the show about it, but it's a door I'll always leave open."

Q: What kind of roles do you hope to play in the future?

A: "I feel like I couldn't dream up the great things that have happened in my life so far and I don't like to put restrictions or expectations on what's coming next. I'm always drawn to something different. I definitely feel like I am open from one job to the next and try to find the next adventure that has something new and different, hoping the next project will be even better than I can imagine."

Q: How do you spend your free time when not working?

A: "I love traveling, shopping, concerts -- I recently acquired a record player so I have been collecting vinyl albums."

Q: So what's on your iPod?

A: Been loving Bon Iver, and their older album, "For Emma, Forever Ago." St. Vincent and Dr. Dog are great, too.

Q: What would you be doing if you were not actor?

A: Probably teaching. My parents are both teachers and I've taught theater and dance in the past, and I do really enjoy the process and experience of teaching, so I guess in the back of my mind, I thought it would be nice to be a professor or teach theater at a college at some point.

Q: Do you have a favorite fairy tale?

A: I have several that I really love. I probably would have to say Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland. Those are probably the two I was most fascinated with growing up.

Actress wants $1 million for age reveal on IMDb

An anonymous actress claims in a million-dollar federal lawsuit that her offers for roles dropped sharply after the popular Internet Movie Database published damaging personal information: her age.

  1. More Entertainment stories
    1. Gifford: 'All roads, for me, lead to Aimee'

After 10 years of drafts and rewrites, Kathie Lee Gifford brings the story of "the greatest person no one has ever heard of' to the stage in "Saving Aimee."

    2. Want to drive past Meredith Grey's house?
    3. Carson Kressley: I'm going to dance again
    4. Edward sweeps Bella off her feet in new photo
    5. 'Ramped' up 'Fear Factor' returns Dec. 12

The actress, identified as a Texas resident of Asian descent, claims she looks a lot younger than she is, and so she had always been careful about keeping her given name and birthdate confidential. As an unknown, she used an Americanized stage name in 2003 when she first listed herself on imdb.com, a listing which she said brought her several jobs.

But in 2008, she tried to advance her career by signing up for a subscription service with the website called IMDb Pro. The service is designed for entertainment industry professionals. It provides contact information and other details for the actors, actresses, directors and others listed.

She provided credit card information ? and her real name ? when she bought the service, according to the lawsuit filed last week in U.S. District Court against Seattle-based IMDb and its parent company, Amazon.com. IMDb used that information to uncover her date of birth, which also isn't disclosed, and added it to her profile on the website, "revealing to the public that Plaintiff is many years older than she looks," the lawsuit says.

"If one is perceived to be 'over-the-hill,' i.e., approaching 40, it is nearly impossible for an up-and-coming actress, such as the plaintiff, to get work as she is thought to have less of an 'upside,'" the claim said.

Story: Selena Gomez granted temporary restraining order

She claims she never consented to having the personal information she provided used for anything but the commercial transaction. IMDb refused to remove the reference to the woman's age from her profile when asked, the lawsuit said.

Through spokeswoman Mary Osako, Amazon declined to comment, saying it never discusses litigation. An email seeking comment from IMDb wasn't immediately returned Tuesday.

The profiles of many actors and actresses on the website list their dates of birth.

The lawsuit claimed the woman wants to remain anonymous "based on fear of retaliation from defendants that would result in further damage and economic injury." John W. Dozier Jr., a Glen Allen, Va., attorney who represents the actress, said Friday that Amazon and IMDb know who she is based on prior communications from her. He declined to provide further identifying details.

IMDb claimed to have obtained the birthdate from the actress's agent, Dozier said, but "we're comfortable they didn't get it from the source they say they got it from."

A key issue in the case will be whether IMDb is immune from liability under the Communications Decency Act, Dozier said. The act ensures that providers of interactive computer services ? think Google ? will not be liable for defamatory information published by another content provider.

If IMDb is publishing research it itself has done on the personal details of actors and actresses, it should not be immune from lawsuits, he said.

"The implications of this are that it may put at risk the very existence of the database," he said. "The number of claims that could be asserted against them would overwhelm them."

While the actress is losing opportunities because of her age, she's also missing work because of her youthful appearance, the lawsuit says.

"Plaintiff has experienced rejection in the industry for each '40-year-old' role for which she has interviewed because she does not and cannot physically portray the role of a 40-year-old woman," the lawsuit says.

The actress is seeking $1 million or more in punitive damages as well as $75,000 or more in compensatory damages. She accuses Amazon and IMDb of breach of contract, fraud, and violation of privacy and consumer protection laws.

First-ever sequence and structure of biologically important carbohydrate

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2011) ? If genes provide the blueprint for life and proteins are the machines that do much of the work for cells, then carbohydrates that are linked to proteins are among the tools that enable cells to communicate with the outside world and each other. But until now, scientists have been unable to determine the structure of a biologically important so-called GAG proteoglycan-or even to agree whether these remarkably complex molecules have well-defined structures.

In a paper published in the early online edition of the journal Nature Chemical Biology, however, a team of scientists from the University of Georgia and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute announced that it has, for the first time, determined the sequence and structure of a glycosaminoglycan, or GAG, proteoglycan.

"The fact that a structure even exists is surprising, because people had the sense that the complexity of these molecules pointed to a randomness," said study co-author Jonathan Amster, professor and head of the department of chemistry in the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. "There are many different areas in medicine that will be enabled by understanding carbohydrates at this fundamental level."

Modifications to the GAG, or carbohydrate biopolymer, portion of proteoglycans have been associated with the presence and malignancy of certain cancers, for example, and the researchers noted that the identification of carbohydrates that are involved in disease opens the door to the development of drugs that can block their action.

The field of glycobiology is still in its infancy, largely because attempts to sequence proteoglycans have, until now, ended in frustration and failure. A small sample of DNA can be amplified many times, and its sequence, or arrangement of molecules, can be determined quickly with modern tools. DNA is simply a set of instructions for making proteins, so a sample of DNA also can allow scientists to produce copious quantities of protein for study.

Carbohydrates, however, are a bit messier. Scientists don't fully understand how cells create them, and a given proteoglycan exists in multiple forms that are similar but not quite the same.

The researchers chose the simplest known GAG proteoglycan, a compound known as bikunin that is used in Japan for the treatment of acute pancreatitis, for their study. Of course, simplicity is a relative term: the sugar is composed of up to 55 distinct carbohydrate rings, which means that there are 210 billion different sequence possibilities. Previous studies performed over the past five years by the researchers that identified common sequences within the carbohydrate decreased the expected number of sequences to a mere 43 million.

Past attempts to sequence proteoglycans have relied on the so-called "bottom up" approach in which scientists use enzymes to chop a molecule into its component parts and then try to put it back together, like a puzzle. Using an alternative approach known as the "top down" method, the scientists placed the compound into high-powered mass spectrometers in both the Amster and Linhardt labs that allowed them to break the compound in predictable places. With larger puzzle pieces to work with, the scientists were able to deduce the structure of bikunin.

"Now that we have demonstrated that bikunin, a small chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan, has sequence, we are moving on to larger, more structurally complex dermatan sulfate and heparan sulfate proteoglycans," said study co-author Robert Linhardt, professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. "These show important biological activities in development and in cancer, and we are optimistic that our sequencing approach will work here as well."

Like all groundbreaking scientific discoveries, the finding actually raises more questions than it answers. Amster explained that the addition of sulfate to the sugar, for example, could in principle occur anywhere along the carbohydrate chain. What the researchers found, however, was that the sites of sulfation occur only in particular rings. "That was the unexpected finding," Amster said, "because based on the current understanding of biology, there is no known mechanism for controlling that type of specificity."

As they work to determine the structure of more complex proteoglycans, the scientists hope that their findings will encourage other researchers to consider the role that they play in health.

"We know that carbohydrates are how cells communicate with each other and their environment, but they're also likely to play many roles that we can't even envision yet," Amster said. "And in order to understand them, we need to be able to study them at this molecular level."

In addition to Amster and Linhardt, additional authors include Mellisa Ly and Tatiana Laremore from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Franklin Leach from UGA, and Toshihiko Toida from Chiba University in Japan.

The study was funded by the Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health.
