After 9/11, Seeking Out New Homes | AOL Real Estate

9/11 homes

NEW YORK -- As vivid as the confusion and fear of Sept. 11 remain for Karen Cooney, she knows it would be worse if she still lived in New York City.

The only way to move forward, she continues to believe, was to move away.

"Every time you would leave the house, there were reminders," said Cooney (pictured above), who relocated in 2004 to Upper Southampton, Pa., with her husband. "You'd relive that whole day."

While New York has bounced back from Sept. 11 in many ways, with the population growing in the past 10 years, even in the area where the World Trade Center collapsed, living there became impossible for some people traumatized by the attack. There are no good numbers on how many people left the city because of the attacks, but an analysis of census data by the Empire Center for New York State Policy found that 1.6 million New York state residents moved to other states between 2000 and 2010.

Among them were residents who absorbed a huge emotional toll or the resulting economic hit that cost them their jobs.

Surrounded by Grief

Cooney lived on Staten Island, home to many firefighters, police officers and others who died that day. Her husband lost a cousin who was in the fire department. Cooney and her daughter even attended funerals for people they didn't know, so that the families would see people coming out to support them.

But over time, it just became too much.

"I think if I had not left, I'm not sure I would have handled it as well," she said.

LaShawn Clark vividly remembers the days after attacks: Heightened security in her neighborhood in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. Living amid so much tension that the sound of a car backfiring would make people run.

And, worst of all, the constant grief over the loss of Benjamin Clark, her husband and father of her five children, who died in the collapse of the World Trade Center's south tower.

In early 2003, Clark packed up her children and left for Allentown, Pa. She has never regretted it, or the new life she has built, which included getting remarried and giving birth to a sixth child. It's been better for her children, too.

"I've seen them grow and I've seen them heal," she said. "And I've seen them heal much quicker than they would have in New York."

Finding Redemption

Making such a change gives people who've lived through traumatic events a modicum of control, and that can be positive, said J. William Worden, a clinical psychologist who has written books on grief and grief counseling.

"Any time you can assert your sense of agency, that's a good thing," he said. "One of the ways you can make meaning is find something positive or redemptive in a situation."

Charles Petersheim did just that. A construction manager, he saw his job disappear when commercial construction dried up after the attack. With his lease expiring, the Lancaster, Pa., native decided it was time to say goodbye to New York.

"Post-9/11, New York was not the most fabulous place to be," he said. "It was very easy to get out of the city and forget about it for a little bit."

He did that by going north to Eldred, N.Y., in Sullivan County, where he had bought a ramshackle property originally intended as a getaway house. He soon saw an opportunity and started a company fixing up homes, then started building old-fashioned houses with modern conveniences.

In the past 10 years, he estimates, he has built 100 homes, selling many to families leaving New York City for a quieter life. He has built his own life in Sullivan County, as well, and now has a wife and small child.

"For me, it was totally the right choice to make," said Petersheim, 41.

Also relocating to Sullivan County was yoga instructor Cheri Brasseale, who lived near lower Manhattan. As a pregnant Brasseale watched the towers burn, she felt her water break -- right on time.

Sept. 11 was her due date.

She made it to her birthing center, where she was watching the news on and off as she waited for her child. She gained perspective on the pain of childbirth.

"If people are dying and grieving, then I can birth a child," she said.

Her son Kai was born at 1 a.m. on Sept. 12. She left the city for a time, a couple of days afterward, heading up to her and her husband's weekend home in Cochecton Center. It's now their permanent home.

A Sense of Community

Part of the draw of their current home is that it gives her a sense of community, something she said was lost in New York in the years after Sept. 11 because of the country's polarized political climate.

Now, instead of the urban jungle, she spends her days on a 10-acre spread with chickens, sheep and goats, in a place where she knows the people who own the theater and the bakery.

"I'm happy with my choice," she said.

For Clark, the mother of six, part of the tension stemmed from the constant presence of Sept. 11 even afterward -- the news accounts, the day-to-day living in a place where everybody had been affected in ways large and small.

"You've made history and you've haven't even tried to make history," said the 45-year-old chef, who this month moved to Charlotte, N.C. "You never expect death will come in a way that it's continuously repeated."

Some of the effects of the attacks followed Cooney and her family after they left Staten Island. She made sure she familiarized herself with her new home by figuring out ways to get back to her home in case of an emergency, something she wasn't able to do in the panic of Sept. 11, when she couldn't contact her family.

But the years since they moved have been good for them.

"It was a good decision," she said. "It was the healing process, and that's how we coped."

Learn Qigong Healing Exercises ? Psychic Workshop

A friend of mine noticed that I was not my usual self and was having problems manifesting prosperity. She told me she had a period of ?stuckness? and had good results from an energy healer named Michael Roland and recommended me to go to his website.

?

I?d tried other energy healings and treatments which helped considerably, but I had some doubts because so far nothing had made me feel like ?the old me??active, enthusiastic, intelligent, self-confident, helpful?I was in grief, missing the best parts of me.

?

I even lost confidence in my mind-body exercises, meditation, and crystals. I felt like I couldn?t clear myself and was on edge, unmotivated, and totally distracted with no sense of time.

People either ignored me or acted angry around me. I was also angry from deferring and giving in to others.

?

My brain was foggy, confused, and I wasn?t able to trust my intuition. I?d ?zone out? during meditation and while listening and kept replaying negative events that led up to my divorce and my leaving of spiritual groups. I had stinging skin sensations like I?d been slapped over most of my body.

?

I withdrew from friends and holed up at home, but couldn?t rest. An inordinate amount of problems at work and dwindling savings due to lack of work made me look haggard. I felt overwhelmed and kept thinking something was wrong with me.

?

I finally went to Michael?s website and read his articles about Emotional and Spiritual Renewal, energy blockages, and spiritual attachments.

I liked the fact that Michael was trained in these skills in China and was also an Acupuncturist. His distance healing services are very affordable.

?

After a few e-mails, I got to know Michael better and liked his warmth, sincerity, and kind concern. I made an appointment on his website and he called me at home on time. He put me at ease right away with his nice voice and humble confidence. He asked what I would like to accomplish in this session and then tuned in to my energy and began to read what was going on.

?

Michael is very much in tune with psychic energies.? He asked about people from a spiritual group I belonged to and determined who was in my energy and why they were there. He worked with me to send these people far away. In my mind?s eye I could see them go. He also found that I needed to see myself far away from a different spiritual organization. As Michael told me about these people, I finally realized why I felt crushed by them and why I no longer wanted to do my spiritual practices. He also found that I still had attachments to and from my ex and cleared these.

?

I felt optimistic and empowered because he found more than other healers and not only helped me to remove attachments, but told me what to do to keep them away this time. He gave me a meditation, hand mudra, and mantra to rely on myself more to rebuild my crushed Spiritual energy field. Michael?s message to me was to empower myself without associations and to keep disassociating and clearing so I can rely on myself.

?

Michael answered all my questions and even though there are still some things to be cleared, I feel I have clarity and understanding, an improved outlook, more compassion for myself, and feel more willing to take an active role in my own life. I felt lighter and freer after our session and felt my energy shifting in my head. My face looks more relaxed and for the past two days, I?ve felt my second and first chakras lit up with energy. I also have had increased opportunities for work and people have been more generous and friendly toward me.

?

Thank you, Michael, for the gift of your compassionate spirit! Your work is just what people need to get their life back on track. I will definitely work with you for healing other areas of my life.

Source: Kris Jenner, Sheryl Underwood join 'Talk' (AP)

NEW YORK ? A person familiar with the CBS daytime show "The Talk" has told The Associated Press the show is adding two new faces to its second season.

The person said Kris Jenner, reality TV personality and mother of the Kardashians, will fill in for Sharon Osbourne for two weeks at the start of the new season and could be a regular fill-on for Osbourne. The other newcomer will be comedian and radio personality Sheryl Underwood. She will co-host the show for the first two weeks and could stay on. The person was not authorized to discuss the cast and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"The Talk" debuts its second season Sept. 6 with returning hosts Osbourne, Julie Chen and Sara Gilbert.

Leah Remini and Holly Robinson Peete left the show after the first season.

Jenner has also been lined up to co-host the fourth hour of NBC's "Today" for one morning alongside host Hoda Kotb in October, according to a network spokeswoman.

And Jenner's memoir is expected in November, her representative announced Friday. To be released by Karen Hunter Publishing, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, the as-yet-untitled book will discuss her family. (Jenner is the mother of reality TV stars Kourtney, Kim, Khloe, Robert Jr., Kendall and Kyle). It also will deal with her work in television (she is the executive producer of the Kardashian shows).

6,500 police to patrol London's Notting Hill Carnival

Thousands of police officers will be deployed among the Calypso dancers and steel drum bands at the Notting Hill Carnival following intelligence suggesting gangs want to create trouble there.

This year's festival also will end early, before dark, as a precaution.

The force said Friday it has already arrested 40 people in raids ahead of the two-day event, which celebrates Caribbean culture and typically attracts about 1 million people.

Scotland Yard said there will be 5,500 officers on duty in London's Notting Hill on Sunday and 6,500 on Monday, the main day of the carnival.

Thousands of officers will be on patrol elsewhere in the capital, creating a combined force that will dwarf the 5,000 officers who were on duty for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton earlier this year.

The numbers reflect a city ? and police force ? still on edge after four nights of rioting and looting this month left the capital reeling, amid questions whether the initial police response was adequate.

World Blog: Riots reveal London's two disparate worlds

The disorder, which spread to other cities across England, was blamed on gangs stirring up trouble and prompted soul-searching about deeper-rooted social issues in Britain.

Scotland Yard Commander Steve Rodhouse said intelligence suggests gangs want to come to the carnival "and create trouble."

He told reporters at a media briefing this week that security operations had been reviewed in light of the recent unrest to take into consideration that the carnival would be taking place "in unusual and exceptional circumstances."

It bills itself as Europe's largest street festival. It attracts hundreds of thousands of people to its parades, rows of jerk chicken vendors and thumping sound stages set up throughout the west London neighborhood.

Public drunkenness and disorder at the event usually prompt a few hundred arrests each year.

Unrest has typically broken out after dark. To address concerns from performers and local businesses, festival organizers decided to wrap up the event a few hours early this year, at 7 p.m.

Chris Boothman, one of the carnival's co-directors, stressed that organizers are not expecting "anything out of the ordinary" and that past festival goers know there's nothing to fear.

He conceded that he could understand why recent riots in London might concern the uninitiated. To them, he said, "our message would be if you're planning to come, come early, enjoy yourself and get home safe."

Boothman said carnival organizers have no problem with the police reinforcements ? as long as their presence doesn't change the flavor of the day.

"Our problem will be if the officers give the impression the police are flooding the carnival," he said.

Rodhouse shrugged off the suggestion that reinforced policing in Notting Hill will leave the rest of London without a strong policing presence, saying: "This is not the case."

In addition to the officers in Notting Hill itself, Scotland Yard said 4,000 ones will be on duty across London to complement the thousands of officers typically on duty on a normal weekend.

"To those who want to come to corrupt this magnificent event you are not welcome. Please do not come," Rodhouse said, adding that the force "will do everything in its power to make it as hard as possible for you."

Launched in 1964 with a few Trinidadian steel bands, the carnival has grown into a major street event that lures partygoers from all over the world.
