Why People Struggle With Belly Fat - The Compelling Truth To Obesity

Article Directory :: Health & Fitness Articles

Belly fat is a struggle for many people across this world. I have struggled with it myself and many of you that are reading this article has struggled with it, and now a lot of our children are fighting against it.

There are fast food joints on every corner, and more buffet lines than we all have money. And everyone is wondering why we are so overweight! Our society is killing us, and most of us are, to be honest, too lazy to do anything about it.

Fad diets are taking over the industry and everyone acts like they have the best product. From Dr. Phil's 17 day weight loss, to Jenny Craig, and the millions of other products out there that claims everything, but usually delivers nothing.

People are growing more and more confused with all the products to choose from that they are starting to not purchase anyone's because they don't know which one to choose. And who could blame them?

The biggest problem with all of this is that belly fat is one of the unhealthiest fats on your body. It's the closet to your heart and adds stress to all parts of the body.

Believe me; I know what it is like to be overweight. I have had belly fat for years. Sometimes I lose it and sometimes I gain it back. It is a life long process, and you have to continuously say no.

Food is like a drug for some folks. I can remember times that food has actually called my name. The problem is most of us given in and wind up eating whatever food is calling.

For the most part, it's sometimes not even the foods that you put in your mouth; it's how much of it you eat. And if you're like me, you can put away some food. One serving doesn't seem like it's enough. Often times we end up eating two or three servings, or plates.

If you're caught in this trap, then it's time to get out of it or you are going to end up very unhealthy.

You see, fat brings all kinds of problems. Try and remember back to a time you weighed less than you do now. How did you feel? How was your energy level? What was your life like?

Now come back to where you are now. How do you feel? I bet it is even hard sometimes to tie your shoes! How is your belly fat working for you now? I know you can't tell me you're as active as you use to be.

Money Talks

Adventures of Stevie V - Dirty Cash (Money Talks) - Official Video

Remember this little ditty from the 1990? For some reason it made me think of Beverley Hills 90210. I also think of the desperation of drug addicts who prostitute themselves for a fix. (Yes, seedy.)

On another note, I recently read a study that suggests that cancer is a risk factor for bankruptcy. Of all cancers, thyroid cancer has the second highest rate of financial bankruptcy than other cancers at 4.8% (behind lung cancer at 7.7%, in front of leukemia/lymphoma at 3.6%). I pondered the reason a little bit today with two survivors. Now I think I know why.

1) Thyroid cancer is now the number 1 cancer among young women. We, young women, earn less than older adults especially since we are relatively new in our careers. So we are often working at a lower salary grade. Second, many young women are in the time of their life starting young families so they are not working the same number of hours because they often have reduced income due to maternity leave and childcare. Third, due to gender bias and inequality, women are still earning less than their male counterparts. Lastly, we are young. We don't think we are at risk for cancer because we are young so we live our lives, we work hard to get ahead and party harder, we do not save for emergencies (unless you have a little stashed away), and sadly are already in debt (thanks to student loans and credit cards). (I know that some of these may not apply to you but you are the exception. :-)

2) Thyroid Cancer is still called the "good cancer". Thyroid cancer is generally still one of the most treatable and curable forms of cancer, that is if you have the more common forms of papillary, follicular, and/or differentiated. So most endocrinologists, in my experience, indicate that one is ready to go back to work 3 weeks after surgery and 4 days-2 weeks after radiation. This is does not nearly reflect my own experience or that of other thyroid patients. Physically, the mobility of the neck returns after three weeks and the radioactivity does wear off but if you are adjusting to thyroid medications or especially if you have to "go hypo", without Thyrogen like I did, to prepare for your radiation, it can take several months to a year to feel completely normal. In addition, some people require a second surgery which then results in more necessary recovery time. Since the thyroid gland controls metabolism and protein production, the absence of a fully functioning thyroid gland can make one feel totally off balance, lethargic, and not well for work. A total lack of functioning thyroid hormone mimics depression symptoms. Regardless of these factors, thyroid cancer patients look so normal. Aside from the scars on our necks, we are fairly healthy looking (albeit extremely tired.)

I am often told that I look good for what I have been through and it looks like nothing happened. Thanks for the compliments. But I think this is one of the reasons why thyroid cancer gets the shaft, why more thyroid cancer patients are bankrupt, and why it's still so understated.

There are no major fundraisers or campaigns for thyroid cancer like there are for other cancers, e.g. THE RUN FOR THE CURE (breast cancer), UNDERWEAR AFFAIR (cancers below the waist), and TEAM IN TRAINING (lymphoma and leukemia.) Also, Canada's thyroid cancer organization, Thyroid Cancer Canada is fairly new, becoming a non-profit in 2002 and charitable organization in 2003. It is run by volunteers and a board of director and funded by donations. (Despite this, TCC does amazing work but imagine what could be done with paid staff.) Perhaps, it is because thyroid cancer patients look so normal that the "healthy looking sick people" do not get funding. Don't get me wrong. I am not negating the financial toll of cancer on the whole also know that folks who have other types of cancer. But there does seem to be a gap when it comes to thyroid cancer. This is also why I strongly believe that there needs to be more advocacy for thyroid cancer especially regarding the causes.)

3) Financial support is difficult to access with thyroid cancer. Thyroid conditions are quite prevalent today. Hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Grave's disease, Hashimoto thyroiditis, and various types of thyroid cancers are the most common thyroid conditions. When the endocrinologists said to me that it takes only 2 weeks to return to work, it negates all of the symptoms that I am experiencing, especially those that prevent me from working. When the endocrinologists and surgeons say it is only two weeks, it is even more difficult to access other types of funding. Thankfully, I received government sick benefits for fifteen weeks which equalled about 40% of my salary and did not pay for March Break but before I could access that I had to use up all of my sick days. If I was to return to work after this and needed a day off to go to an appointment or I was not well, I would have to take days off without pay. Another thyroid cancer survivor told me that our condition does not qualify for the Government Disability like other cancers do. Thankfully, after over 3 months of prayers, forms, phone calls, blood tests, doctors' visits, and waiting for an unspecified amount of time, I did qualify for a disability claim through my employers' insurance plan. At moments, it felt like it would not get through. I was so happy. But then I found out what the amount of my coverage would be: less than 25% of my salary which is about $ 950/month. That's right. I will be living on 1/4 of my salary for the summer. $ 600 of this is rent, so essentially for $ 350 I will need to eat, transport, and entertain myself. I feel a bit disappointed which I fully acknowledge on the other hand, it is better than nothing. I have hopefully ended the main portions of my treatment so I will return to full-time salary in September. However this is still a shock. If my thyroid treatment were more complex or required more time off, the impact would be a lot more.

4) Thyroid cancer numbers are increasing. The incidents of thyroid cancer are on the rise. I know of two other teachers in my school board who are younger than 35 that are also experiencing thyroid cancer. I met one woman who knows 3 women going through thyroid cancer now. Another woman I spoke says her friend knows 5. I'm not ready to say "epidemic" but the prevelance is high. Imagine the financial strain if we all were asking for money.

Since some of you might be facing the financial pains that come with cancer, I have listed two resources from the Thyroid Cancer Canada website.

For those living in Ontario, Canada, there is a financial assistance booklet from the Princess Margaret Hospital/University Health Network.

Also read Kairol Rosenthal's blog. She is a thyroid cancer survivor and author of Everything Changes: The Guide to Young Adult Cancer in Your 20s and 30s. She has a really cool post about cancer and medical debt. Although she is an American and her references are a bit different, the stats are similar and we still feel the same pain.

How have I been coping financially so far?
First off, let me first say that I am blessed. I have mentioned it in my post Nature Walking 1, I have been provided for and I am trusting that I will always have enough. My faith in God has been really helpful in this regard. So prayer, and prayers from friends, family, church folk, and strangers, has been helpful in this regard. So even when I thought I would be left in a lurch with less than 25% of my salary (and a wedding coming up next year), I am trusting that I will be okay. Jean at Wellspring said the time of to recover is a gift and instead of gold and diamonds, I'd have time this summer. Instead of going out for dinners, I'll go out for tea. In one way, having less money forces me to do less. (I'm a bit of a workaholic and busy bee.) I will have to slow down. Second, I will never underestimate having an emergency fund. No matter how small the amount you could put aside into savings each week, do it! Thankfully, I had a small emergency amount which I have used. Even on my 40% of my salary, I have been stashing a few dollars aside each week. This comes in handy. Third, my tax return could not have come at a better time. Plus, having credit cards helped (especially those with a balance). I also cook a lot of food so my fiance and I eat at home a lot more which saves money. My fiance and I do not have cable so that is one bill that we don't have to pay. I often take public transit to avoid expensive parking fees. I cut corners here and there. My mother is paying my car insurance. Bless her. My fiance is also a musician and works retail so although our combined incomes are not large at the moment, we have been able to make do with what we have.

DA: No DNA tests needed in Wis. homicide cases (AP)

MILWAUKEE ? A review of 2,100 Milwaukee County homicide convictions from the past two decades did not find a single case in which DNA testing would be warranted to ensure that an innocent person wasn't sent to prison, the Milwaukee County District Attorney's office said Friday.

The review began last June after three people charged or convicted in homicides were exonerated when DNA testing linked the victims in their cases to a serial killer. The findings of the review shocked attorneys for the Wisconsin Innocence Project and for one of the exonerated men.

"While we were encouraged by and commended by the DA's office for undertaking this initiative and for their stated commitment to identifying individuals wrongly convicted, we were really surprised and disappointed by the conclusion that no cases warrant DNA testing," the project's co-director Keith Findley said.

District Attorney John Chisholm said those who conducted the review ? a senior assistant district attorney, three interns, a paralegal and multiple victim advocates ? whittled it down by first looking at cases in which convicts maintained their innocence and where there was evidence that could be genetically tested.

"We've invested an enormous amount of time and energy into following this protocol and we are just confident to the best of our ability that there are no ... cases that would prompt us to seek additional DNA testing," Chisholm said.

On the second round, Assistant District Attorney Steven Licata examined the complete files of 486 cases, from which 60 were forwarded for additional review by Assistant District Attorney Norman Gahn, a DNA expert, and other members of the committee.

The review was "predicated on the legal presumption in the validity of the past conviction, not a search for doubt," he said. Special attention was given to cases where someone maintained innocence or sought help with the court or another entity like the Innocence Project, according to the review's findings.

Attorney Jon Loevy, whose client William Avery is one of the three exonerated men, said the district attorney's office's decision not to review DNA evidence in a single case is "impossible to understand." Avery served five years in prison for the strangling death of Maryetta Griffin before being released last year.

"Why is the prosecutor's office so afraid of DNA testing? What harm is done by testing evidence that could yield a definitive scientific truth about guilt or innocence? In my opinion, they are afraid of that truth," he said.

The discovery that three men had been charged, and two of them convicted, in killings later linked to serial killer Walter Ellis through DNA testing was embarrassing for Milwaukee County prosecutors and unnerving for the community, and it prompted the review of whether genetic testing might be warranted in other homicide cases since 1992.

Ellis pleaded no contest to killing seven women over a 21-year period and was sentenced in February to life in prison. Three other slayings have been linked to him through DNA, including Griffin's.

Chaunte Ott spent 13 years in prison for the 1995 slaying of the 16-year-old runaway Jessica Payne before DNA testing linked her death to Ellis. Like Avery, Ott is suing the Milwaukee police department in federal court. He says officers coerced two people to give false testimony and failed to intervene when post-conviction DNA testing showed he was innocent.

Another man was charged but acquitted in a third slaying, that of Carron Kilpatrick in 1994, that was later linked to Ellis.

Chisholm said three cases are still active but he couldn't say whether Ellis would be charged with those.

Findley said the project suggested 12 cases to prosecutors early on but never gave them a full accounting of people convicted of homicides in Milwaukee County who had reached out to them.

The office was responsive and open to answering questions for the first few months, but the project has "been in the dark" since January, Findley said.

Findley said at least seven cases met the legal criteria for post-conviction DNA testing, including that the person has maintained innocence, physical evidence exists that had not been tested previously or favorable testing results would have likely caused the person not to be prosecuted or convicted if the results been known.

Chisholm said they reviewed all the cases they requested in a later round of reviews but that none had met their criteria for DNA testing. He said that doesn't mean the project can't do additional testing if they believe it is merited.

Chisholm suggested the Innocence Project could pursue further cases through the normal post-conviction process. Findley said he plans to do that for at least seven cases to seek DNA testing.

"It is consistent with what we have seen nationwide and that is it's very difficult to ask people who have invested in obtaining convictions to recognize the potential exculpatory value of additional evidence," Findley said.

AP source: Accuser issues shake Strauss-Kahn case (AP)

NEW YORK ? Prosecutors have serious questions about the credibility of a hotel housekeeper who has accused former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn of raping her, and they are taking the extraordinary step of seeking a substantial reduction in his pricey bail, a person familiar with the case said Thursday.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss matters not yet made public in court, told The Associated Press that prosecutors have raised issues about the accuser's credibility in the case against Strauss-Kahn, but would not elaborate on what those issues were.

A separate law enforcement official who is familiar with the case, but not authorized to speak about it publicly, told the AP that the issue was not necessarily about the rape accusation itself, but about troubling questions surrounding the alleged victim's background that could damage her credibility on the witness stand. The official refused to elaborate.

The New York Police Department, which investigated the case, declined comment. The woman's lawyer did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

Strauss-Kahn has been under armed guard in a Manhattan townhouse after posting a total of $6 million in cash bail and bond. He denies the allegations.

Prosecutors with the Manhattan district attorney's office had argued against his release in May, citing the violent nature of the alleged offenses and saying his wealth and international connections would make it easy for him to flee.

"The proof against him is substantial. It is continuing to grow every day as the investigation continues," Assistant District Attorney John "Artie" McConnell told the judge. "We have a man who, by his own conduct in this case, has shown a propensity for impulsive criminal conduct."

The New York Times first reported that investigators uncovered major inconsistences in the woman's account of her background, citing two law enforcement officials. One of the officials told the Times that the woman has repeatedly lied since making the initial allegation May 14.

The discoveries include issues stemming from the asylum application of the 32-year-old woman, who is from Guinea, and possible links to criminal activities such as drug dealing and money laundering, one of the officials told the newspaper. The Times reported that senior prosecutors and Strauss-Kahn's lawyers are discussing whether to dismiss the felony charges against him.

Another person familiar with the case, speaking on condition of anonymity for the same reason, said earlier Thursday that Strauss-Kahn may get his pricey bail and house arrest arrangement eased in the case at a court hearing scheduled for Friday. The person declined to detail what the new bail arrangements might be.

Strauss-Kahn lawyer William W. Taylor would say only that the hearing was to review the bail plan. The district attorney's office declined to comment.

Strauss-Kahn was held without bail for nearly a week after his May arrest. His lawyers ultimately persuaded a judge to release him by agreeing to extensive ? and expensive ? conditions, including an ankle monitor, surveillance cameras and armed guards. He can leave for only for court, weekly religious services and visits to doctors and his lawyers, and prosecutors must be notified at least six hours before he goes anywhere.

The security measures were estimated to cost him about $200,000 a month, on top of the $50,000-a-month rent on a town house in trendy TriBeCa. He settled there after a hasty and fraught househunt: A plan to rent an apartment in a tony building on Manhattan's Upper East Side fell through after residents complained about the hubbub as reporters and police milled around the building.

Under New York law, judges base bail decisions on factors including defendants' characters, financial resources and criminal records, as well as the strength of the case against them ? all intended to help gauge how likely they are to flee if released.

Defendants and prosecutors can raise the issue of bail at any point in a case. It's common, if asking a judge to revisit a bail decision, to argue that new information or new proposed conditions change how one or more of the factors should be viewed.

The maid told police that Strauss-Kahn chased her down a hallway in his $3,000-a-night suite in the Sofitel hotel, tried to pull down her pantyhose and forced her to perform oral sex before she broke free.

Strauss-Kahn's lawyers have said the encounter wasn't forcible, and that they have unreleased information that could "gravely undermine the credibility" of the housekeeper. The defense was using private investigators to aggressively check out the victim's background and her story.

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly has said the detectives investigating the case found the maid's story believable.

"Obviously, the credibility of the complainant is a factor in cases of this nature," Kelly said in May. "One of the things they're trained to look for, and what was reported to me early on, was that the complainant was credible."

The woman's lawyer has said she is prepared to testify despite a "smear campaign" against her.

The Associated Press generally does not identify accusers in sex crime cases unless they agree to it.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, was in New York on a personal trip. He left the hotel shortly after the alleged assault ? to have lunch with a relative, his attorneys have said.

During his initial bail hearings, prosecutors noted that Strauss-Kahn was arrested on a Paris-bound plane at John F. Kennedy International Airport, and that they could not compel his return from France if he fled. His lawyers have underscored that it was a long-planned flight, and they've said he wants to return to court to clear his name.

He resigned his IMF post after his arrest.

UWA hosts biggest anthropology conference in southern hemisphere ...

The biggest anthropology conference to be held in the southern hemisphere has attracted more than 500 delegates from 30 countries.

Hosted by The University of Western Australia, it is the first combined conference of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES), the Australian Anthropological Society (AAS) and the Association of Social Anthropologists of Aotearoa/New Zealand (ASAANZ). ?The conference is entitled Knowledge and Value in a Globalising World: Disentangling Dichotomies, Querying Unities.

One of the conference organisers, Dr Greg Acciaioli from UWA's Discipline of Anthropology and Sociology, said the role of anthropologists in studying daily life was often overlooked. ?They are instrumental in work as diverse as designing human-friendly machines, to understanding the global financial crisis, he said.

Keynote speakers are Professor Jean Comaroff of the University of Chicago, whose research has focussed on the religion of the southern Tswana peoples of southern Africa and public order, policing, and the commodification of ethnicity in postcolonial contexts, and Professor James Ferguson of Stanford University, whose work in Lesotho and Zambia has focussed on development, modernisation and social justice. ?Plenary speakers include: ?Professor Shiv Visvanathan of the Centre for the Study of Developing societies in Delhi; Distinguished Professor Dame Anne Salmond of the University of Auckland; and Professor Alberto Gomes of La Trobe University.

Thirteen concurrent sessions will be held during the four-day conference covering areas as diverse as globalisation, Indigenous knowledge and resource use, neoliberalism, migration, food, creativity, religion, medicine, climate change, education, and developments in psychological anthropology. ?There will also be an ?anthropology through film' schedule, with ethnographic films from countries including Nicaragua, Arctic Canada, Serbia and Kosovo, Brazil, Italy and Denmark. ?Titles include: ?Inuit Knowledge and Climate Change; The Bagyeli Pygmies at the Fringes of the World; Releasing the Spirits: ?A Village Cremation in Bali; ?and Roma Boys - the Love Story.

A pre-conference native title workshop on 4 July, provides an opportunity for applied anthropologists to discuss developments in native title anthropology and heritage. ?Professor Tim Rowse will deliver the AAS Distinguished Public Lecture that evening exploring themes in the history of Indigenous political thought.

The conference will be held at UWA from July 5-8.

Oil prices slide after recent bounce (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? World oil prices slid on Thursday on profit-taking after soaring the previous day on easing concerns over Greece and signs of strengthening energy demand in the United States.

Brent North Sea crude for delivery in August sank $1.01 to $111.39 in early London trade, having rocketed by $3.62 the previous day.

New York's main contract, West Texas Intermediate for August, fell 37 cents to $94.40 a barrel.

Crude futures had surged on Wednesday after a vote in the Greek parliament eased worries about a destabilising default, while new data from the United States showed that US crude inventories had fallen.

The rally came after Greek lawmakers approved an unpopular austerity plan demanded by international creditors, staving off the threat of a default that could have knock-on effects throughout the eurozone.

The news cheered investors and caused the European single currency to rise against the dollar, which in turn buoyed the price of oil, analysts said.

The oil market has now regained most of the ground they lost after last Thursday's surprise announcement by the International Energy Agency that it was tapping strategic reserves to make up for lost Libyan output.

Separately on Wednesday, official data showed that US crude oil inventories fell by 4.4 million barrels last week, exceeding market expectations for a drop of 1.6 million barrels.

Falling oil inventories in the United States, the world' largest economy, indicate that US demand for energy is on the rise.
