Fresh Android for June 16: Music Unlimited, Starbucks, City Story (Appolicious)

The Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup. It?s a beautiful day in Boston. Time to get off the ice and out into the sun, but don?t forget your Android phone as you step outside. With it, you?ll be able to listen to great music (Music Unlimited), grab a nice coffee (Starbucks), and plan out the city of your dreams (City Story).

The Android music service wars are far from over. Music Unlimited is the latest entry and it?s from Sony Network Entertainment.

You don?t have to wonder what the service is like ? download the app for free and take advantage of the 30-day free trial that lets you access over seven million songs in Sony?s music streaming library. After the trial, you will have to decide whether to drop it, sign up for the basic service ? with selected channels that adapt to your music tastes a la Pandora ? or go with the premium service ? with full access to the entire catalog and Premium channels that are exclusive to the service.

Need more? Sync songs up from your PC and listen to them over your phone, discover new artists by using the app?s Related feature, or play music quickly and easily using the Android home screen widget.

You?ve heard about countries where people can pay for stuff using cell phones but you?ve been pretty sure you didn?t live in one ? until now.

Starbucks for Android lets you leave your wallet at home, thereby reducing the total amount of stuff you need to haul around. This app provides ?Pay with your Android? service at over 6,800 company-operated stores as well as more than 1,000 Starbucks stores nestled inside of Target and Safeway locations. The real mechanism is your Starbucks Card ? you can store it digitally, check the balance, and reload it with money from your credit card ? all inside the app.

Wondering whether the Starbucks near you supports this? No worries. The app will find the stores around you that do and navigate you there.

Sure you?ve launched a farm, managed organized crime, maybe even staffed a bakery, but can you run a city?

Yet another ?story? game arrives fresh to the market ? this one lets you plot out your own dream city by designing buildings, positioning landmarks, routing rivers, and crafting parks. Do well and the population skyrockets. Do poorly and, well, your city becomes a ghost town.

Like other story apps, you can send gifts to friends to entice them into the game, though in this one the gifts are buildings and other infrastructure artifacts. You?ll find this city a little NYC-centric ? the landmarks include the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.

University fee plans turned down

StudentsWelsh students will not face higher tuition fees
Related Stories

Welsh universities' plans to charge students tuition fees of up to £9,000 a year have been rejected.

Initial fee plans from universities were turned down by the body that funds higher education.

Education Minister Leighton Andrews said it showed Wales was taking a "robust" approach towards university tuition fees.

A Welsh Government subsidy means Welsh students will not face big increases in fees.

If Welsh universities want to charge more than £4,000 in 2012/13 their fee plans must be approved by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (Hefcw).

Plans will only be agreed if institutions show they meet certain requirements, including on equal access and improving the student experience.

Answering questions in the Senedd on Wednesday, Mr Andrews said Hefcw wrote to all higher education institutions (HEIs) on Friday to tell them that in their present form, their fee plans did not meet the requirements.

“We made a commitment in our manifesto... to ensure that Welsh students would not pay higher fees wherever they study, and that is a commitment for the life of this assembly”

Leighton Andrews Education Minister

Mr Andrews said: "In other words all HEIs in Wales have been warned that as currently presented their fee plans would be rejected.

"This demonstrates that the process we are following for fee plans in Wales is far more robust than that operating in England."

Hefcw will receive revised plans at the end of June and make a final decision on 11 July.

Mr Andrews announced last year that Welsh students will be shielded from increased tuition fees, wherever they study in the UK. Their fees, currently around £3,400, will only rise in line with inflation.

He said the government thought its estimated cost of the policy up to 2016/17 was "robust".

He added: "It is notoriously difficult, let me say, to estimate some of the issues around cross-border flow of students and we are still not certain yet of all of the fee levels at every higher education institution operating in England and Wales.

"So there are always going to be uncertainties around this, but we are confident and we have made a commitment - as a party we made a commitment in our manifesto, one of our pledges - to ensure that Welsh students would not pay higher fees wherever they study, and that is a commitment for the life of this assembly."

“I hope this is not a political stunt that simply allows the minister to hit the headlines, as students cannot afford for politicians to play games with their futures”

Katie Dalton NUS president

Aberystwyth, Cardiff, Bangor, Glamorgan and Newport universities said they wanted to charge the maximum £9,000. Some courses at Newport would cost £8,250.

Higher Education Wales, which represents universities, said the fee plans were ambitious proposals to widen access: "No university has ever been under the illusion that the approval of fee plans would be akin to a 'rubber stamp' - this was always going to be a challenging, iterative process".

NUS Wales president Katie Dalton said: "I hope this is not a political stunt that simply allows the minister to hit the headlines, as students cannot afford for politicians to play games with their futures.

"Instead, it needs to send a very clear message to Welsh universities that they have to take this process seriously."

Conservative Angela Burns said: "The minister has put Welsh universities in the impossible situation of either charging the maximum fee or risking severe underfunding compared to universities in England, which can charge higher fees."

Plaid Cymru's Simon Thomas said: "If such large sums are charged there is a serious risk that a university education will be out of reach for many."

He said the Welsh Government's policy was based on universities charging an average £7,000.

China's Wen to visit Germany and Britain (AP)

BEIJING ? Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will visit Hungary, Britain and Germany next week, the Foreign Ministry announced Thursday, amid the financial crisis in Europe.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Wen is visiting at the invitation of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, British Prime Minister David Cameron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

But he did not give a specific agenda for the June 24-28 trip, saying only that Wen would discuss "issues of common concern."

Top on the list could be Greece, where rioters have clashed with police in Athens over proposed austerity measures, and coalition talks between Greece's government and opposition parties have collapsed, renewing fears of a government debt default.

Hong told a regular news conference that China was watching the situation and that it was a long-term investor in the European securities market.

"We hope Greece can realize stability and development through cooperation with the EU and the international community. We hope the eurozone countries will be able to realize stable economic growth," Hong said.

The fall of Greece: another drop in April

The Greek economy continues to crumble: Industrial production is in contraction territory, consumer confidence has plummeted, and business confidence is down

Looking at the most recent OECD economic indicators, Greece makes by far the weakest showing in all the Eurozone as it continues to plod through tremendously difficult economic times.

A Victorian-Style Family Holiday Just a Few Hours Away | A Child Grows

The Abbey at Cape May

Cape May is a very special seaside town tucked away in Southern New Jersey. It has history; it has entertainment; it has the seaside. ?You and your kids can ride bikes or a surrey and explore the Victorian homes, take a horse-drawn carriage, climb to the to of a light house, shop in the town?s center or just lie by the pool. Kids can play miniature golf, look for diamonds at Sunset Beach, search for seashells, go dolphin watching, play in an arcade, have frozen custard at a stand or just sit back and take in the cool breeze of the Atlantic Ocean.

Cape May, New Jersey?s collection of?Victorian homes attracts visitors from all over the world. It?s no wonder. The entire New Jersey seashore town is a?National Historic Landmark. ?The Victorians are pretty spectacular. ?Here?s a taste of what you would see:

If you?re looking for family-friendly accommodations, look no further than Congress Hall. ?Located a block from the shore, the hotel?puts every ounce of its soul into the design, decor and activity offerings. It really takes hold of its history and origins and incorporates it into everything. ?It opened its doors in 1816 as a boarding house. ?Cape May was America?s first seaside town. ?At the time, the inn was sparse but busy. ?In the 19th century, it grew, along with Cape May?s reputation as a vacation resort and gained recognition as a summer retreat for the nation?s Presidents, like Grant, Pierce, Buchanan and Harrison. ?In 1968, Bashaw?s grandfather took over the hotel, and it has flourished ever since. ?It was purchased by the Cape Resorts Group in 2002 and underwent a $25 million renovation.

Congress Hall

The resort has the vibe of a classic, airy beach house (like key chains that are old luggage tags, classic dishes and the rooms themselves feel like actual cabanas), but it is also sophisticated and first-class at the same time. ?It takes real skill and attention to achieve that outcome. ?The hotel is an?L-shaped, 4-story building with porticoes the entire length of the building at the 3rd story level. ?It faces the ocean ? the ?porch? is a fantastic?place to sit in one of the many rockers and while away the hours in peaceful bliss (and it even picks up the WIFI signal).

Just behind the porch, there?s a gorgeous pool with free umbrellas, towels and beach chairs. ?You can get a private cabana for a fee. ?Kids will love the pool and will want to spend hours there.

Congress Hall?s philosophy is to provide memories for families. ?They offer Congress Camp, a camp for kids aged 4-12, which offers evening activities in July and August and painting and ceramics classes. ?Their holiday offerings sound so interesting: on the 4th of July, they offer a lobster bake and an All-American Celebration with music, face painting, picnics, a choir and fireworks. In December, they offer Winter Wonderland, which sounds beautiful where the hotel lights a big tree and the entire hotel. ?As a matter of fact, Cape May is supposed to be all lit up at that time. ? In the spring, they offer ?Family Ceramics?.

The food at Congress Hall is exquisite. ?The hotel has hired the most impressive chefs from all over the world. ?The Blue Pig Tavern, located in the hotel?s lobby, offers delicious classic cuisine, and I can honestly say the food was heavenly. ?The Rusty Nail, just a few blocks from Congress Hall which is also Congress Hall owned, offers inexpensive beach food with live music and tables to sit and dine by the sea. ?They also offer room service.

The Rusty Nail

Grand Ballroom

For the moms and dads able to step out, there?s a bar conveniently placed downstairs called The Boiler Room. ?They feature local entertainment and are open into the wee hours of the night.

If you?re planning to visit Congress Hall, you can?receive a $100 Resort credit to be used during your stay at?Congress Hall,?Virginia Hotel, or?beach shack. Reservations must be reserved online using the promo code?MOMBLOG. They must be booked by July 31, 2011 for stays in 2011. The $100 credit will be applied at the time of checkout and is not valid with any other offers.

To get to Cape May from Brooklyn, use your GPS but basically you?ll need to get on the Garden State Parkway South and get on the NJ-109S. ?It?s approximately 121 miles from Brooklyn and will take about 3 hours.

Disclosure: The folks at Congress Hall and the Motherhood provided my visit free of charge, but all opinions expressed are completely my own.

Republicans Best Ally Against President Obama Is ... President Obama (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | It seems that in about six months, should the economy not pick up as many suspect that it won't, the Republicans will have a powerful ally arguing against the re-election of President Barack Obama. That person is President Barack Obama.

Hot Air's Allahpundit has found a video of an interview done by MSNBC on Feb. 1, 2009, around the time that the stimulus package was being passed. The newly inaugurated president is heard to opine that should the economy not turn around within three years, he will be a one-term president.

On Feb. 1, 2012, time will be up.

One should expect to see the clip of the president musing about his reelection chances in a bad economy on a million Republican campaign ads. The clip is devastating not only because it is the president in his own words, but it also tends to preempt the narrative, which will no doubt be tried by the president and his people, that the bad economy is all the fault of his predecessor, President George W. Bush, and was worse than he had thought.

Obama also condemned himself out of his own mouth recently when, at a Jobs and Competitive Council meeting in Durham, N.C., he was asked about the permitting process delayed projects under the stimulus bill. He actually joked, according to Karl Rove writing at Fox News, "Shovel-ready was not as shovel-ready as we expected."

Expect that clip to play on a million Republican ads as well, no doubt with clips of unemployed people who do not get the humor in it.

It is hard to see, under the circumstances, how President Obama can argue with President Obama on his economic record. He will try, no doubt, to suggest that the Republicans would be worse, that we cannot go back to the "failed policies of the past", and so on. The Republicans will no doubt remind people what the unemployment rate and GDP growth were when those "failed policies" were extant.
