The important thing to remember is to be flexible. Focus on your goal but change your way if one thing doesn't work.

How to Be an Expert No. 5 - Visualize the End Result

You will speed up the process of reaching your goal through visualization. Create mental images of the end result, the picture of you already attaining your goal and becoming the expert. Practice this visualizing exercise right before you fall asleep and upon awakening every day. See yourself in it clearly as though it is really happening.

Ask for feedback, opinions and comments from other people. Don't take negative criticisms personally. Accept criticisms because you can learn from them. If you think about the criticisms that you receive you might discover some useful information.

Home ? Health and Fitness, Science and Health ? Eating disorders ...

By Megan Purzarang, Contributing Writer

They can start with something as simple as a critical comment, a billboard image or a magazine cover. They affect all age groups but primarily older children and teenagers. The two most common forms are polar opposites but equally detrimental.

Heidi Unkefer THE CHRONICLE

They are eating disorders, and despite decades of study and attempts to raise awareness, anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are becoming more prevalent. In the past decade, anorexia-related hospitalizations for children 12 years old and younger have increased by as much as 199 percent, according to a brief by the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project.

Columbia student Cassandra Sheets remembers her first experiences with eating disorders as a preteen.

?Basically, I was always thinking about food,? Sheets said. ?My grades were really terrible, and I didn?t have a lot of friends. All of my time was spent thinking about what I could eat and what I wanted to eat and thinking about certain arbitrary numbers that I wanted to get to.?

Now a member of The F Word, Columbia?s feminist club, Sheets runs Body Positivity workshops so students have an opportunity to share stories. The next workshop will take place during The F Word?s April 13 conference in the Alexandroff Campus Center, 600 S. Michigan Ave.

?I wish that somebody had been willing to talk to me about it, somebody who had gone through it and was OK and has made it from hell and back,? Sheets said. ?It was hard for me to find people at first because I wouldn?t talk about it, but once you start talking about it, you realize just how many people are going through the same thing.?

She attended therapy sessions several times as a teenager, but it was not until college that her perspective changed.

?I started calling myself a feminist and discovering all of these great ways to analyze the media and analyze all of the harmful messages about how my body was wrong, and knowing now that it?s not wrong,? Sheets said. ?I have a lot of good things going for me in my life now, and I don?t want my eating disorder to mess that up. I realized it was more important to have energy for school, for friends and feminist stuff than it was for me to lose weight.?

The project defines anorexia as a psychiatric condition in which a person idealizes an unrealistically thin body image and strives to lose weight by not eating. The condition is similar to obsessive-compulsive disorder, as the individual obsesses about weight to an unhealthy degree.

According to project authors, people with anorexia tend to avoid social situations where food or drink is involved. Usually there is a significant weight loss, such that an individual is at least 15 percent underweight for his or her size. When this happens, bones become noticeable beneath the skin and there is a serious risk of weakening of the heart muscle, which can cause disturbances of the heart?s rhythm. There is also the risk of outright starvation.

Cynthia Bulik, director of the University of North Carolina?s Eating Disorders Program and author of ?The Woman in the Mirror: How to Stop Confusing What You Look Like with Who You Are,? said the increase of anorexia among children is especially dangerous.

?With children, anorexia can take hold fast,? Bulik said. ?Since they are already small, falling off the growth curve can happen very fast and their weight can [drop] like a stone, so you have to be vigilant.?

Bulimia is another psychiatric condition that causes an individual to obsess about body weight. It is marked by the use of self-induced vomiting to hold weight down. This habit often pairs with ?binge eating,? in which people eat as much as they want without worrying about caloric repercussions because they regurgitate afterward.

Signs of bulimia often go unnoticed because they are not as visible as those of anorexia. Bulik added that family members should watch for a pattern of sudden leave-taking after meals, the disappearance of large amounts of food and marks on the palms or knuckles from sticking hands in the mouth to induce vomiting if they suspect a loved one has an eating disorder.

Dr. Martha Levine, assistant professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center, said she believes the media influence the frequency of these disorders among youths.

?A multitude of magazines are targeted toward making women feel that there are always problems with how they look and present themselves,? Levine said. ?Advertisers do this because by making people feel uncomfortable, they can try to convince them to buy their products.?

Eating disorders are not always a lifestyle choice. They can have a genetic component as well, said Nancy Matsumoto, co-author of ?The Parent?s Guide to Eating Disorders.?

?It is [likely] that eating disorders are a combination of genetic and environmental factors,? Matsumoto said. ?You don?t have to be genetically susceptible, but it would be far more likely that you would get an eating disorder if you had a genetic predisposition.?

Angeline M. Huffman, MBA, CPA

As this issue reaches the streets many of you have already filed your 2011 tax returns, but many more are still gathering your information to take to your tax preparer. Here are some tips to help you out for the 2011 tax filing and getting a jump on 2012.

For Individuals, 2011

  • Avoid the cost of rapid refund. You can avoid the cost of rapid refund services if you set up your refund for direct deposit to your checking account and e-file your return. The IRS generally will have the funds in your account in as little as 4 days.
  • Make sure the preparer signs the form and includes their PTIN as required by law.? Although the preparer signs the return, you are responsible for the accuracy of every item on your return.? The preparer must also give you a copy of the return.
  • Whatever your tax situation might be, make sure you don?t put it off to the last minute. This increases the likelihood of significant errors, either on your part or the part of your tax preparer. Keep in mind that you are not the only client your tax preparer has that is waiting until the last minute and most tax preparers are completing about 65% of their clients returns in the last 2 weeks before the filing deadline. Also, don?t delay filing your return because you know you owe the IRS. The filing deadline is just that?a filing deadline. The firm deadline for paying any tax due is April 17th (for 2012) regardless of whether you have filed an extension for your return or not.
  • Mortgage Interest is not as simple as it used to be. Recent IRS scrutiny of home mortgage interest deductions now require you to carefully track refinancing(s) and the use of loan proceeds. Only the interest on mortgage and home equity loans used to buy or improve your home plus $100,000 are deductible on Schedule A. Those who ?cashed out? several times may have already passed the $100,000 mark.
  • ALL charitable deductions of any amount must have a receipt. Any individual contribution over $250 must also have an acknowledgement letter from the charity, and the letter must be dated by the date you file your return. The letter should show the date and amount of any individual contribution over $250, and should also state that no goods or services were received in return for the contribution. This includes non-cash donations; they too must have a receipt. Non-cash donations over $500 also require Form 8283 to be filed with your return.
  • Before the W-2s arrive, talk to your kids, and tell them not to file yet. They may want their refund, but if they file and claim themselves, you could lose the College Educational Credit of $1,500 and the loss of the American Opportunity Credit of $1,000, if your student is in college. In addition, as your tax bracket is higher than your child?s, the loss of the $3,700 dependency exemption is worth more to you ? maybe $500.

You are allowed to claim a child as a dependent if they lived with you for more than half a year and were under age 19, or was a full time student for five full months and under age 24. Many kids worked part-time or during the summer and will now receive their W-2. Therefore, both you and your child should prepare your tax returns both ways and see what the difference would be. Then give your kids the difference in the tax refund they lose. Most often you will still come out ahead by claiming your child.

For Small Businesses and Property Owners

  • Get professional help with the filing of business licenses or incorporation papers. This means an actual accountant, preferably a CPA (Certified Public Accountant who is licensed by your state), not just your spouse/bookkeeper. A CPA is most knowledgeable in determining if an S-Corp, LLCs, etc. is best for your situation from a tax perspective. Please still consult with a lawyer for the liability perspective. Different forms of businesses have different ?rules? and there are tax savings available for some.
  • While an accountant seems relatively expensive in terms of tax preparation, they may be able to save you thousands by correctly applying tax laws to your specific situation to have the greatest financial outcome. It may cost you slightly more to have a professional fill out all the required forms, which many tax payers are not even aware of, but if you spend a hundred to save a thousand in taxes, clearly accountants can be well worth it. This is more likely the case if you are self-employed.
  • Choose worker classifications carefully. Hiring a freelance web designer may be fine, but understanding which workers should be classified as employees rather than subcontractors can make or break your business. The IRS and most states have made it a top priority to ensure workers are properly classified. Their default classification is as an employee making it up to you to prove the worker is not an employee but a contractor. Maryland passed the Workplace Fraud Act in 2009 making it more difficult than the IRS rules for classifying workers as contractors. The government is making this issue a top priority in order to ensure it is receiving its fair share of payroll taxes. If the worker is an employee, the employer must pay payroll taxes (one half of Social Security and Medicare, and federal and state unemployment) and collect payroll and income taxes from the employee.
  • You can still deduct the costs of a vacant rental property as long as it is still held with the intent to rent it. In Tax Court Summary Opinion 2011-122 a taxpayer was allowed to deduct rental property losses for two years when there were no tenants in the property, because the property was held for income-producing purposes and available for rent.

For 2012 and the future

  • File a new W-4. If you received a large refund or owed taxes for 2011, you need to file a new W-4. Check what you believe your income will be for 2012 compared to what it was for 2011 to determine if you need to make additional adjustments to your income tax withholdings. You must adjust your W-4 to withhold more taxes if you owed for 2011 and believe you will owe again for 2012, otherwise you will pay underpayment penalties.

It?s just as important to adjust your income tax withholding downward if you received a big refund and expect to do so again next year. Why lend your money to the government all year? Some states actually delayed paying refunds in early 2010 due to budget crunches.? Many people treat their refunds as a forced savings account. However, this can cost you big time if you use your refund to pay off credit cards that charge large interest rates. Wouldn?t it be more cost effective to receive your refund in your paycheck all year and not use the credit cards?

  • Get in the habit of setting up a record keeping filing system to stay organized. Make sure you have all your relevant tax documents on file and stored together. Having all your documents in order helps to ensure your records are accurate.
  • The IRS 2012 mileage deduction rates are:
    • 55.5 cents per mile for business miles driven
    • 23 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
    • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations
  • 2012 IRA amounts remain at $5,000 per person, plus a $1,000 catch up for taxpayers over age 49 by 12/31/2012. The unchanged amounts apply to traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs and non-deductible IRAs.
  • 2012 401(k) and similar deferrals increasing from $16,500 to $17,000 for 2012, but unchanged for SIMPLEs ($11,500) and the over age 49 catch-up ($2,500 for SIMPLEs and $5,550 for others).
  • Never hesitate to consult with a CPA such as myself. Don?t be afraid of obtaining the knowledge you need. The fees for doing so generally pale in comparison to the tax savings you will gain and the mistakes you will avoid.

(AP) ? If anybody ever needed a hug, Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia were the guys.

Good thing they had each other.

On a miserable day at the Masters where they had to laugh to keep from crying, two of the world's best ? and best-known ? golfers each turned a shot at the green jacket into a comedy of errors.

They came into Saturday's third round one shot off the lead. Neither broke 40 on the front nine. McIlroy shot 77 to wind up at 1-over par. Garcia was slightly better ? his 75 left him in the red, at 1 under, but still eight shots off the lead.

This was the story of two great players laying a huge egg on the big stage. The absurdity of the whole thing came to a head on the 12th green, when they both dropped putts for the first birdie of either player's round. To celebrate the feat, they shared a mocking embrace as they made their way to No. 13.

"We needed to feel a little love from someone out there," McIlroy said. "It was a nice moment in a round filled with not-too-good moments."

For McIlroy, it started getting bad on the first swing, a blocked drive into the pine straw that led to a double bogey. That was the first of three 6s he posted on the front nine en route to a 42.

This year, he got it over with on Saturday. Last year, it was a 43 on the back on Sunday. He had a four-shot lead coming into that final round. It dwindled away, and by the 13th hole he was standing on the tee box, head in the crook of his elbow, watching a chance at his first major slip away.

"Seems like every year I come out here, I throw a bad nine holes out there," McIlroy said.

At least he has his major; McIlroy overcame last year's debacle and won by eight strokes at the U.S. Open two months later.

Garcia? He's still waiting.

He may no longer be the Best Player to Never Win a Major, but at 32, Garcia still has the talent and the time to break through for one or more. He has finished in the top 12 in the last three and was shooting at pins the first two days of this year's Masters to put himself very much in the picture.

Asked after the second round if he was ready to win, he said he honestly didn't know.

Then he went out and answered the question: No.

Yet even with four bogeys on the front side, Garcia was the low man in the twosome heading to the turn.

"Pfffft," he said when asked to compare and contrast his round with McIlroy's. "Hard to say. I think it's kind of similar. We couldn't really feed off each other's good energy because there pretty much wasn't any. We couldn't get anything going. The bad holes were really bad and our good holes were bad."

Both players finished the day with a pair of birdies over the last four holes ? maybe something to build on, or maybe nothing more than a brief-but-needed reminder that, yes, they really can play this game.

When it was over, they shook hands, shared a smile and hugged again. Arm-in-arm, they walked off the green and through the chute that leads to the scoring area ? a couple of Sunshine Boys trying to put the worst part behind them. A bit later, they were in the interview area together, where they were practically finishing each other's sentences.

"If you can't laugh at yourself, what can you laugh at?" McIlroy said. "It was good to have this guy by my side even if we didn't play so well."

Iraq: Video appears to show top Saddam deputy

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A video posted online Saturday purports to show Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, the highest ranking member of Saddam Hussein's ousted regime still at large, lashing out against Iraq's Shiite-led government.

It was not possible to verify the authenticity of the video or determine when it was made.

The man in the video, posted on a website linked to Saddam's now-outlawed Baath party, was introduced as al-Douri and bore a striking physical resemblance to the former Saddam deputy. He noted that nine years had passed since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, suggesting the video was made recently.

Wearing an olive military uniform and eyeglasses, he criticized Iraq's Shiite-dominated government, led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and what he said was meddling by neighboring Shiite powerhouse Iran.

"Everyone can hear the sounds of danger echoing daily and threatening this country," he said during the hour-long address, adding that al-Maliki's Dawa Party "has announced Iraq as the Shiite capital, and called on all Arab leaders to surrender to this reality."

Al-Douri has been reported dead or captured more than once in the past. He has not been seen in public since the U.S.-led invasion, though audio tapes purporting to be from him have been released. His whereabouts are not known.

Al-Douri is believed to have played a key role in financing Sunni insurgents seeking to undermine Iraq's post-Saddam government. He was the "king of clubs" in the deck of playing cards issued by the U.S. to help troops identify the most-wanted members of Saddam's regime.

Ali al-Moussawi, a media adviser for al-Maliki, said the tape is meant to "boost the morale of the terrorists."

"Al-Douri wants to spread terrorism and sectarian violence under the pretext of resistance," he said. "This will not affect the work of the government or the political process."

Al-Moussawi said al-Douri is still a wanted man, but that he doubts that al-Douri is still in Iraq because his need for extensive medical care in a well-equipped clinic would make it impossible to hide.

Also Saturday, a bomb hidden in a plastic bag blew up on a minibus, killing two passengers and wounding nine in Baghdad's commercial heart of Karrada, according to police and hospital officials. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Deadly attacks have declined in Iraq in recent weeks, but dozens are still killed every month. March saw the lowest monthly toll for violent deaths since the 2003 U.S.-invasion.
