How to Buy and Sell Estate Jewelry
One of my favorite ways to earn extra money is to buy and sell vintage estate jewelry. I've found that good jewelry is always in high demand and very easy to sell. Personally, I visit flea markets, auctions and yard sales looking for hidden gems. In most cases, I resell the items on eBay?. In other cases, I take the items to a local auction.
If you are just getting started buying and selling vintage estate jewelry, you need to educate yourself. You need to spend some time on eBay seeing what types of jewelry brings the most amount of money. It wouldn't hurt to pick up a few reference books on the subject either. Listed below are a few helpful basics to teach you the ropes.
Jewelry is normally broken down into three types of categories. They are costume jewelry, vintage jewelry (aka estate jewelry) and fine jewelry.
1. Costume Jewelry is any jewelry that isn't made of a precious metal. This type of jewelry is normally made of plastic, Lucite, or metals such as pewter, copper, brass or stainless steel.
2. Vintage Jewelry is anything made in the 1970s or earlier. Some of this jewelry can be very valuable, depending upon the age, maker, condition and rarity of the item.
3. Fine Jewelry is made of silver, gold, platinum, rhodium, or any other precious metal. Typically, this type of jewelry is the most valuable. It is also the most counterfeited.
Next, these are the most common types of jewelry:
? Bracelets
? Earrings
? Necklaces
? Brooches
? Rings
? Watches
? Pendants
Now that you know the basics, it's time to get started. You should go to your local hobby store and purchase the following items (1) digital gram scale, (2) magnet, (3) gold tester, and (4) magnifying glass. These are the essential resources for any jewelry buyer.
Now, it's time to get started. Take one weekend and start by visiting local flea markets and yard sales. Look for items that catch your eye. Look for gold and silver items. Don't be afraid to haggle with the person selling the items. I've found one great way to get a real good deal is to make an offer for all the jewelry. Normally, they will give you a good discount if you buy everything.
When you get home from your buying trip, sort through your items. Separate the fine jewelry from the other stuff. Look each item up online to see what it sells for. Determine which items you want to sell on eBay and which items you want to sell at a local auction.
In the beginning you will make some mistakes. Keep records of everything you buy and learn from your mistakes. In no time at all, you will know what you are doing. And you will find that this is a great way to make a part-time income.
