Incoming Softball Freshman Named Diamond Sports Catcher Of The ...
STARKVILLE, Miss., August 5, 2011 ? James Madison softball incoming freshman Sarah Mooney (Huntersville, N.C./North Mecklenburg) was named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and Diamond Sports 2011 National High School Catcher of the Year on Friday.
?This is a wonderful accolade for Sarah to be nationally recognized as the high school catcher of the year,? JMU head softball coach Katie Flynn said. ?Congratulations to Sarah and her North Mecklenburg softball team and coaching staff. We are excited to have her on campus this month and in a Dukes uniform this fall.?
The Diamond Sports Catcher of the Year award is presented annually to the top catcher from an NFCA member institution in each of the following divisions: NCAA (Divisions I, II and III), NAIA, NJCAA (Divisions I, II and III), Cal JC, NWAACC and high school.
A committee comprised of head coaches in each of the 10 divisions determines the winner of their respective awards.
Mooney, a repeat winner after taking home the award in 2010, capped off an excellent career at North Mecklenburg High School, hitting .779 with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs as a senior. Behind the plate, she did not commit an error and threw out 12 would-be base stealers while allowing just two passed balls. Her Vikings won the I-Meck Conference crown in her senior season.
In addition to Catcher of the Year honors, Mooney is a two-time NFCA/Louisville Slugger First Team All-American and All-Region selection. She joins an incoming freshman class that includes pitchers Reba DePriest (Apache Junction, Ariz./Skyline) and Heather Kiefer (Potomac Falls, Va./Potomac Falls), and outfielders Morgan Heath (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and Haley Widner (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Ready).
