June's employment figures, at a glance (AP)

Hiring slowed significantly in June. Employers added only 18,000 net jobs, the fewest in nine months. The unemployment rate rose to 9.2 percent, the highest this year, the Labor Department said Friday. The tiny job gain shocked economists, who expected hiring to pick up from its dismal showing of 25,000 in May. The slow pace of hiring raises doubts that the economy will improve in the second half of this year after stumbling in the spring.
